The Indische Buurt used to be the neighbourhood people warned you about; now it's where you go to eat. This walk takes the Javastraat at its own pace and ends with a glass of gin in a park, which is about as good as an Amsterdam afternoon gets. Three and a half kilometres, downhill in spirit the whole way.

Start at Muiderpoort and walk the Javastraat east — Turkish ovens, Moroccan grocers, Surinamese roti, the new cafés filling in between. Buy as you go. Step off at the Timorplein for Studio/K, a cinema and café in an old craft school, then back to the street and on to Javaplein, where it widens into squares and terraces.

Past the square the city stops and Flevopark begins. The meadows hide the Zeeburg Jewish cemetery, walled and overgrown since 1914, with the park grown deliberately around it. Walk to the water and the Distilleerderij 't Nieuwe Diep, gin distilled in an 1880s pumping station. A glass by the canal, and the tram 14 turns round at the gate.

Pick up the *Javastraat* at the Muiderpoort end and walk it east. This is the *Indische Buurt*'s spine — Turkish bakeries, Moroccan grocers, Surinamese counters and newer cafés, shoulder to shoulder. Don't plan; just buy what smells right.

Enter where the meadows open. On your left, behind the trees, is the *Joodse Begraafplaats Zeeburg* — the Ashkenazi cemetery consecrated in 1714 and closed for a century, left to grow wild. Walk the long grass; the park was planted around the graves on purpose.

Distilleerderij 't Nieuwe Diep
Gin and *jenever* made in an 1880s steam pumping station inside the park, with a tasting room called, accurately, the Pumping Station. Hours are seasonal and weather-dependent — check before you bank on it — but a glass by the water here is the whole point of the afternoon.
