The hill at Alexandra Palace gives you the view that Parliament Hill is always credited with but doesn't quite deliver. From the south terrace of the palace, with the city laid out below, you can see from Canary Wharf to the Shard to the distant smear of the North Downs. On a clear evening, with the light going orange behind you, it's better than anywhere else in London.

Muswell Hill is the residential neighbourhood at the top — Art Deco Broadway, good cafés, the feeling of a self-contained town on a hill. Come in the late afternoon, walk the park as the light fades, and take the overground back from Alexandra Palace station.

Stops along the way

Things to notice.

  1. 01
    1

    Wood Green High Road

Start at Wood Green and walk west up the hill. The high road itself is uninspiring; the side streets off it are much better.

  2. 02
    2

    Alexandra Park

The park slopes south toward the city. The terrace below the palace gives you the panorama: Canary Wharf to the east, the Shard south, the Heath to the west.

  3. 03
    3

    Alexandra Palace

The Victorian events venue that launched the BBC's first public television broadcast in 1936. The ice rink is open in winter. Walk all the way round the south terrace.

  4. 04
    4

    Muswell Hill Broadway

The top of the hill. Art Deco shopping parade, good independent cafés, and the Odeon that still has its original frontage.

  5. 05
    5

    Fortis Green Road

Walk down toward East Finchley through the residential avenues of this hill town. The descent is long and the views keep opening up.
