Camberwell is one of the old south London villages that was absorbed by the expanding city in the 19th century and has never been quite fashionable enough to lose its character. Camberwell Green is still roughly where the village green was; the Georgian houses on Grove Lane still exist; the art college has been producing painters, illustrators, and designers for over a century.

The street market on and around the green on Fridays and Saturdays is the least curated in the area: fruit and veg and household goods and nothing aspirational. Myatts Fields at the walk's end has the apple orchard that gets more attention on heritage charity websites than it does in person, which is how it should be.

Things to notice.

  1. 01
    1

    Denmark Hill station

From here, walk toward Camberwell Green through the residential streets to the east of the station. The arts and crafts houses on Coldharbour Lane are worth a detour.

  2. 02
    2

    Camberwell College of Arts

Wilson Road. Camberwell's art school has been turning out painters since 1898. The annual degree show in June is open to the public and very good.

  3. 03
    3

    Camberwell Green

The old village green, still roughly in its historic position. The street market that runs beside it on Fridays and Saturdays is one of the least glamorous and most useful in south London.

    Grove Lane

The old road north out of the village. The houses on the east side date from the 18th century; some have their original garden walls. A surprising street.

    Myatts Fields

A Victorian park with rare heritage apple trees, a restored café, and the kind of community atmosphere Camberwell has maintained while nearby areas changed.
