Josefstadt is the smallest of Vienna's districts and the one that feels most like a village that never left. Under three kilometres, all of it at walking pace, built around a cobbled church square that the tour buses never reach.
Come up from Rathaus and cross into the eighth on Lerchenfelder Straße. Duck into the Altlerchenfeld church for the painted interior — Romantic, floor to vault, and almost always empty. Then climb to Jodok-Fink-Platz and the Piaristenkirche Maria Treu, the baroque church whose twin towers and open cobbled square are the quiet centrepiece of the whole walk. This is the moment to slow down.
From there, Lange Gasse — the antique shops and the old Beisls (a Viennese pub-eatery), the Alt-Wien atmosphere kept alive better here than anywhere in the city. End on Josefstädter Straße at the Theater in der Josefstadt, in use since 1788, before the U6 takes you on under Otto Wagner's viaduct.
