Chelsea resists the tourist circuit because it offers nothing spectacular, only quality. The Chelsea Physic Garden is the best-kept secret on the Embankment: four acres of medicinal and economic plants, the oldest rock garden in Britain, and an entrance fee that is some of the best value in London.

Cheyne Walk is the walk's other half: the river-facing terrace of Georgian houses where Turner had his studio at number 118, where George Eliot died at number 4, and where Rossetti kept a menagerie of exotic animals that alarmed the neighbourhood. The Royal Hospital grounds are always open; the Chelsea Pensioners in their scarlet coats are usually visible.

Stops along the way

Things to notice.

  1. 01
    1

    Sloane Square

The upmarket square on the Chelsea-Belgravia border. The Royal Court Theatre at one corner has been staging serious work since 1956. Coffee at Partridge's.

  2. 02
    2

    Chelsea Royal Hospital

The retirement home for Chelsea Pensioners, founded by Charles II in 1682. The grounds are open; the Great Hall has Verrio's mural and Gibbons' woodcarving.

  3. 03
    3

    Chelsea Physic Garden

The second-oldest botanic garden in England, hidden behind a brick wall on the Embankment. Open Tuesdays to Sundays. The Pond Rockery has plants from all over the world.

  4. 04
    4

    Cheyne Walk

The most beautiful residential street in London: Georgian houses with river views, the homes of Turner, Eliot, Rossetti, and Henry James. Walk the full length.

  5. 05
    5

    King's Road

Walk north back to Sloane Square. The 1970s boutiques are gone but the King's Road still has its faded glamour. The Bluebird restaurant marks the old garage.
