The south-west tip of Södermalm sits right on the water, and on a Sunday it has a flea market to go with the view. Under three kilometres: the riverside boardwalk, the green island across the channel, the quiet sound, and a brick church on the hill that you can see from half the city.

Start at Hornstull and drop to Hornstulls Strand, the boardwalk along the river. On Sunday the loppis — the flea market — strings out along it: bric-a-brac, old clothes, food wagons, the cheerful clutter of other people's attics. Other days it's a calmer waterside with cafés, and the market's absence is no great loss. Across the channel is Långholmen, the green former prison island; take the view, or cross if the day's long.

West to Pålsundet, the narrow sound full of moored boats, then up to Högalidskyrkan — Ivar Tengbom's twin-towered brick church, built 1916 to 1923 on the hill, a landmark from the water for miles. Climb to it, look back down the channel, and drop to Hornstull for the line home.

Stops along the way

Things to notice.

  1. 01
    1

    Hornstull (T-bana)

Start at the south-west corner of *Söder*. Out of the station and down toward the water — the river side is where the walk lives.

  2. 02
    2

    Hornstulls Strand

The riverside boardwalk along the strand, with the Sunday *loppis* (the flea market) when it runs — bric-a-brac, racks of clothes, food wagons. On other days it's a quieter waterside stretch with cafés. Come Sunday for the market, any day for the water.

    3

    The Långholmen view

Look across the channel to *Långholmen* — the green former prison island, now a swimming-and-walking park. You can cross to it; for this walk, just take the view and the boats going by.

  4. 04
    4

    Pålsundet

The narrow sound between *Söder* and *Långholmen*, lined with moored boats and a small park. The calmest water on the route — a good place to sit before the climb.

  5. 05
    5

    Högalidskyrkan

The twin-towered brick church on its hill, Ivar Tengbom's 1916–1923 landmark, visible from the water for miles. Climb to it for the building and the view back down over the channel.

    6

    Hornstull (T-bana)

Down off the hill and back to where you started. Red line home — or stay for the market if it's Sunday and you've talked yourself into the lamp you didn't need.
