Ottakring is where Vienna does its grocery shopping, and the Brunnenmarkt is the proof — the city's longest market street, where Turkish, Balkan, Arab and Viennese stalls trade shoulder to shoulder down the length of Brunnengasse. Three kilometres, best on a Saturday morning, walked slowly and eaten the whole way.
Start at Josefstädter Straße and head west; the Grätzl announces itself within a couple of blocks. Then it's the market itself — walk the full length of Brunnengasse, buying fruit, olives and bread as you go, until the street opens out at the Yppenplatz. This is the heart of it: a square of café terraces with a farmers' Markt filling the middle on Saturdays. Sit down here. The slow end of a market morning, coffee in hand, is the whole reason to do this walk.
Carry on up the quieter northern end of Brunnengasse — the residential Ottakring the market grew out of — and finish at the Ottakringer Brauerei, brewing on the western edge since 1837. Thaliastraße and the U6 are a short walk on from there.
