This is the evening walk in Vinohrady, and it has a clear job: get you to the western slope of Riegrovy sady in time for the light. Everything before that is the warm-up, and the warm-up happens to include one of the strangest churches in Europe.

Three kilometres, gently uphill then down. Start at Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad (metro A), where Jože Plečnik's Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord stands — a 1932 brick monolith with a glazed clock the size of a rose window, like nothing else in the city. Circle it once. If the farmers' market is on, the square in front is the right place to stock up.

Then wander. The streets between the square and the park are the café quarter — roasters, wine bars, corner bakeries — and the best way through is no plan at all. Let a good-looking street take you to the edge of Riegrovy sady.

The park does the rest. The beer garden under the trees, then up to the west-facing slope where the whole city opens out, castle on the ridge, spires between. Wait for the sun. Then drop down to Náměstí Míru and the metro home.

Start at the square named for the Hussite king. Metro A puts you under it; come up and the brick church is right there. The farmers' market fills the square on Wednesdays through Saturdays — if you've timed it, buy something to carry up to the park.

Down to Náměstí Míru
Leave the park's south-west corner and the streets carry you down to *Náměstí Míru* — the church of St Ludmila, the metro back, or the walk down to Muzeum if you'd rather keep moving. A good place to stop walking and start eating.
